Het huis van bewaring in Middelburg omstreeks 1900, met op de voorgrond de sluizen en op de achtergrond de Nieuwe Haven met het Badhuis van de stad.
Abraham Magaris (1721-1792), alias Johannes Cato Kamerling, heelmeester en falsaris, sinds 1765 gedetineerd in het tuchthuis te Middelburg, met een ketting aan lijst.
De gasten van de herberg De Druiftak aan de Nieuwe Haven zagen behalve de Stadsschuur ook 't Rasp en Spinhuys. Zoals het mooi staat beschreven in een artikel in De Wete, over de geschiedenis van het gevangeniswezen in Middelburg: "Daarna werd het Werkhuis aan de Stadsschuur in gereedheid gebracht, “om ten spoedigste een rosmolen daarin te plaatsen tot tuchtiging der kwaaddoeners en vagebonden,” alsmede een plaats af te schutten “voor ledige en ongeregelde vrouwen om haar te doen spinnen.”
